Tips and Tricks: Horizontal Fencing

Redwoods Inc Waco - Custom Yard Fence Lumber Project

Horizontal Fencing.  It’s all the rage these days, and why shouldn’t it be?  Nothing really makes your backyard pop quite like a modern, clean look with several opportunities to snazz up your fence to make it truly yours.  We love helping with the design process, and we’d like to share a few tips to help you with your new fence!  Your primary concern when building your fence is creating strength against the wind.  If Joe Nichols taught us anything, its that its fury is unstoppable.  So, we’ve come up with a few ideas that will help you fight the wind, and ultimately lengthen the life of your fence.

  1. Close the distance between those posts. Setting the posts closer typically only adds one or two more per run, adding substantial strength while not drastically affecting the cost.
  2. Span two posts with your boards, and create a brick pattern. When you offset your pickets, you ensure that there won’t be a continuous seam where the pickets meet on the post.
  3. Use stainless steel screws. The initial savings that you’ll receive by using framing nails or sheetrock screws will not offset the cost of having to replace boards and fasteners once they rot out your lumber after one rainy season. Stainless steel screws are a one-time application that are sure to keep hold and not react with your pickets.
