Redwood is a time-honored choice for outdoor decking.  Redwood has inherent and natural preservatives that give it resistance to rot and insects. It is also the most stable of all softwoods.  It is not susceptible to rot and insect infestation like other woods when exposed to the elements (moisture, heat, etc.)  Redwood is available on a limited basis in few grades for many different uses.

The grade of Redwood that we stock for decking and other outdoor projects is construction heart.  This is the best choice for our climate because it does not allow for any sapwood. The heartwood is the only part of a Redwood tree that carries the resistance to decay and insects.

Grown and milled predominantly in Northern California, Redwood is an attractive and popular choice for a variety of projects.  Redwood has many of the same desirable characteristics as Western Red Cedar.

Exceptionally durable, Redwood is naturally resistant to insects, decay and weathering; also, its natural inherent characteristics prevent excessive warping, splitting, and cracking in response to moisture or extreme temperatures.  Stained or sealed Redwood remains like new for decades, while untreated Redwood weathers to an attractive silvery hue.  No matter the project- small or large-, indoor or outdoor, residential or commercial- Californian Redwood is guaranteed to do the job beautifully.

Fasteners for Redwood:

Hot-dipped galvanized, aluminum and stainless steel fasteners are all corrosion-resistant and can be used to fasten Redwood or Cedar.  Other types of nails and screws are not recommended.  They can rust and disintegrate and react adversely with the natural preservative oils present in Redwood and Cedar resulting in unsightly stains and streaks.  Stainless steel fasteners are the best choice, especially if the wood is to be finished with transparent or semi-transparent stain.  Use No. 304 stainless steel for general applications and No. 316 for seaside exposure.
