When it comes to enriching the color of your lumber for the longest amount of time, there is only one brand we trust: Sikkens Proluxe SRD Stain. It’s one coat stain and seal formula simplify the application process, and the oil-based stain absorbs into the cedar, prolonging the life of its color. However, with the Texas sun beating down, along with the changes in Central Texas weather, even the best stain will start to weather in about 4-5 years (You can tell that your stain is starting to fade when water doesn’t bead up on the surface.) We had our assistant yard manager, Tyson, refinish a cedar chair following the instructions listed in PPG’s manual:
- Preparation:
- Spray the surface with clean water
- Clean surface with a generous coating Tri-Sodium Phosphate (TSP) solution. Let sit for 20-30 minutes.
- Scrub the surface with a hard bristle brush.
- Powerwash at 500-800 psi from 8-12 inches away from surface. Let dry for 48 hours
- To allow for stain absorption, sand with 80-grit sand paper.
- Application
- Apply stain within one week of preparation.
- Apply one coat with a natural bristle brush* or sprayer. If you use a sprayer, be sure to go by and back brush where the stain overlaps. * Natural bristle (horse hair) brushes grab the stain better, therefore allowing a more even spread
- Clean applicators with mineral spirits.
