Grown and milled in the upper Northwest and Canada, our hand-selected Cedar is an authentic, elegant, and enduring option for a wide variety of projects. Cedar is valued for its rich texture, amber-to-reddish-brown coloration, rustic aesthetic, and heady natural scent.
Cedar is highly durable—its dimensional stability shows comparatively little warping and shrinking, and its natural preservatives improve overall toughness. Cedar also holds stains and paints well, and is naturally weather, decay, and insect resistant. Easy to cut, nail, saw, or trim, our Cedar is an exceptionally workable material for any of your outdoor needs.
Along with all its virtues of beauty, stability and endurance, Cedar is naturally easy-going. Its ultra light weight makes transporting and handling a snap. Its soft texture and straight grain mean quick, clean sawing and shaping. It takes nails and other fasteners without cracking or splitting.
Cedar is naturally resistant to decay and insect damage. Its unique "grown-in-the-wood" preservative oil means that no further chemical treatment is needed, unless the lumber is in direct contact with the ground. Stability? Nature favors Cedar. With less than half the swelling and shrinking tendency of other domestic softwoods, it lies flat, stays straight, retains fasteners and provides a firm base for paints and stains. Fasteners for Western Red Cedar:
Hot-dipped galvanized, aluminum and stainless steel fasteners are all corrosion-resistant and can be used to fasten Redwood or Cedar. Other types of nails and screws are not recommended. They can rust and disintegrate and react adversely with the natural preservative oils present in Redwood and Cedar resulting in unsightly stains and streaks. Stainless steel fasteners are the best choice, especially if the wood is to be finished with transparent or semi-transparent stain. Use No. 304 stainless steel for general applications and No. 316 for seaside exposure.
